Past Preservers is proud to be a partner with MyEGYPT on this great new venture.

MyEGYPT, the platform that aims to contribute to sustainability in Egypt through culture and tourism,
is pleased to announce the launch of its latest initiative, MyEGYPT Expeditions.

MyEGYPT Expeditions offers an annual, week-long excursion to a single locale within Egypt that introduces participants to local communities, events, activities and change-makers that they may otherwise never have the opportunity to encounter and experience. “Our journeys aim to open pathways of mutual understanding and respect between Egyptians and visitors through transformative experiences that offer unique exposure to Egypt's culture and heritage,” says MyEGYPT Co-founder, Kelly Krause.

MyEGYPT’S first Expedition, Beyond Tahrir – Discovering Cairo After the Revolution, will give
participants the opportunity to explore the many complexities and contradictions of Cairo and bring
them face to face with the communities, initiatives and leaders who are re-shaping Egypt’s capital.
Over eighteen percent (18%) of all fees from Beyond Tahrir will go towards MyEGYPT Expeditions’
participating organizations. “We have a fabulous lineup that includes CLUSTERCairo, Mada Masr,
and the Tarek Waly Center for Architecture and Heritage,”says Krause. “We also have a wonderful
operating partner in Past Preservers Media Consultancy, who is helping us to spread the word and
finalize details on the ground in Cairo. All of these organizations will offer our participants an
experience that goes off the beaten path and inspires them to further explore the diversity of Egypt”

Beyond Tahrir will take place in Cairo from 10 - 17 January 2015 and will include accommodation,
meals, exclusive events, local transport and travel insurance. An early booking rate at a savings of
10 % will be offered through 30 November. Spaces are limited; the Expedition group will be limited to twelve (12) persons MAX. Calling All Writers & Video Producers!

You may have read recently about our collaboration with Ancient History Encyclopedia, we wanted to explain more about how that will work for the benefit of you, our experts.

They are currently looking for short videos and texts for the Ancient History Encyclopedia, an online publication that strives to provide the most accurate and engaging information about ancient history to students and enthusiasts around the world. The site is read by nearly 700,000 people every month, and around 300,000 people would have access to the content you provide through social media. With over 1.2 million monthly pageviews, your article or video will reach more people than any journal ever could.

Interested? They are looking for both texts and videos that:

give a general overview of a subject, such as "Who was Alexander the Great?" or "Who were the Celts?",

or provide a detailed look into a particular aspect of the subject, such as "What were Alexander the Great's battle tactics" or "Celtic metalworking",

and make sure to tell a story, including key events and fun facts presented in an engaging, fun way.

For videos, you could also tell their viewers why you're so interested in your subject. Or you could produce a video about your field and your position, for example, "How did you become an Egyptologist?" Or talk about a day in the life of an archaeologist.

For texts, they are looking for both definitions (up to 1500 words, covering the key facts about a topic while focusing on the story) and articles (more in depth and/or more detailed on a narrower topic) that we can present to their readers.

Although new original text and video content is preferred, they will also republish older material, as long as you hold the rights to its publication. All submissions are reviewed by the editorial team before publication.

Join AHE, an international team of writers and editors, and show the world just how fascinating ancient history can be!

Please make sure you are signed up on our database and send us your videos and text to casting@pastpreservers.com
All videos should be sent to us using a file share service such as Dropbox, or Wetransfer.

Ancient History Encyclopedia is a non-profit educational website with a global vision: to provide the best ancient history information on the internet for free. It combines different media, subjects, and periods in interactive ways that will help readers understand both the "big picture" and the detail. Editorial review is at the heart of AHE’s process to ensure highest quality. Recommended by the European Commission's eLearning and proudly listed as open education resource in the OER Commons, AHE is additionally a contributing member of the prestigious academic Pelagios network. The website has just added video content, broadening its reach and audience. With a global reach of over a million page-views per month, AHE is probably the world’s most-visited educational resource exclusively devoted to the ancient world.

Nigel Hetherington, Past Preservers Founder, pointed out "this alliance will take us closer to achieving our goal of bringing the heritage and media worlds' closer together"

Both of our organizations are committed to the principle that the public should have increased access and exposure to the disciplines of archaeology and history: "Story" is a key component in the word "history.” Past Preservers and AHE aim to convey an excitement for the past through original content and programming.

Ancient History Encyclopedia’s founder, Jan van der Crabben, says: “I am extremely excited at the prospect of working together with Past Preservers. We share the same vision and we want to excite people across the world about the fascinating history of antiquity. Our organizations have different contacts and audiences, and bringing them together is going to enrich both of them.”
Past Preservers founder Nigel J.Hetherington and world renowned Egyptologist Dr. Kent R.Weeks' study on the site management of the Valley of the Kings in Luxor is now available to purchase online.

This volume, one of the few detailed archaeological site management plans from the Arab world, is the result of twenty-five years of work by the Theban Mapping Project at the American University in Cairo. It traces the history of the Valley of the Kings and offers specific proposals to manage the site and protect its fragile contents and has a wider application to sites worldwide. At the same time, it recognizes the need to provide a positive experience for the many visitors who are drawn to the site every year.

At the time of its inception, this was one of the first site management plans developed for an Egyptian archaeological site and as its proposals are implemented, they offer a replicable model for archaeologists, conservators, and site managers throughout Egypt and the region. Published in both English and Arabic editions by the American University in Cairo Press and supported by the World Monuments Fund, this critical study will help to ensure the survival of Egypt's patrimony in a manner compatible with the country's heavy reliance on tourism income.

Nigel says, "This is a combination of over ten years work in the Valley of the Kings and elsewhere in Egypt. For this unique opportunity I have to thank Dr. Kent Weeks and my best wishes also go out to the rest of the Theban Mapping Project team without whom, this work would not have been possible."Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10444230220209706740noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3290214034133640204.post-62203606248816428042014-05-05T04:30:00.000-04:002014-05-05T04:10:14.390-04:00Support Past Preservers on The Hadrian's Wall Hike

Cairo, Madrid & Luxor - 22nd April 2014 - The exact facsimile of the Tomb of Tutankhamun has been installed underground in a building next to Carter’s House, at the entrance to the Valley of the Kings and is due to be officially opened on 30th April 2014.

The facsimile, made by Factum Arte, Madrid is the most accurate large-scale facsimile to be made to date. This is the culmination of many years work and is an important milestone in the approach to responsible heritage management and the use of advanced technology in the promotion of sustainable tourism. It has been made with the full support of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, the Minister of State for Antiquities and with the backing of the European Union. The facsimile is a gift to the people of Egypt from Factum Foundation. It is housed in an underground building designed by the Tarek Waly Centre: Heritage and Architecture, Cairo. Past Preservers was proud to have assited as local agents for Factum Arte in Egypt. The public opening will be 1st May 2014.

The work has involved the development of advanced 3D technologies for recording the tombs and perfecting the method to replicate them. It is the first stage of a larger project that involves the creation of facsimiles of the Tombs of Seti I and Nefertari – both currently closed to the general public.

The need for a facsimile:

The Tomb of Tutankhamun was hidden for over 3,000 years, but since its discovery in 1922 it has rapidly deteriorated - not due to neglect but rather because it was not built to accommodate the vast numbers of people who visit each day; in 2011 it was announced by the Supreme Council of Antiquities that the original tomb must be closed for conservation reasons. The original tomb is currently open giving visitors a unique opportunity to visit both it and the facsimile and compare the experience. The facsimile is part of an initiative to safeguard the tombs of the Theban Necropolis that are either closed to the public for conservation reasons or are in need of closure to preserve them for future generations.
The facsimile of the Tomb of Tutankhamun will give visitors an opportunity to understand the history of the tomb since its discovery, encourage conservation of the original site and establish Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities as a world leader supporting the use of high-resolution documentation to monitor the condition of the tombs.

The gift and installation of the facsimile has very specific objects:

To promote a positive and sustainable approach to tourism - and to encourage an awareness that sustainable tourism can be a positive force in the conservation of Egypt’s cultural heritage

To facilitate the transfer of technology and skills to set up workshops on Luxor’s West Bank to carry out the recording and production of facsimiles of the tombs of Seti I and Queen Nefertari

To create long term skilled jobs in Luxor

Adam Lowe, Founder and Director of Factum Arte, comments “As the number of cultural tourists increases, more people are becoming aware that each visit to a heritage site leads to its decay - we want to turn that awareness around and make each visit a positive story not just for the original but also for the visitor. We can do this by using exact facsimiles that allow an experience of the original while at the same time preserving it and providing funds to make sure the site is maintained.”

James Macmillan-Scott, President of Factum Foundation, said "This is an seminal project both in relation to the preservation of our cultural heritage but also in the understanding and acceptance that advances in technology have, for the first time, made it possible to preserve that heritage through high resolution digital recording and, where appropriate, the creation of exact facsimiles."
